6 Breathtaking Places to See in Lisbon
1.) Padrão dos Descobrimentos
The Padrão dos Descobrimentos is just one of many iconic monuments in Lisbon, but it truly of the most remarkable. Located on the bank of the Tagus River estuary, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos overlooks the waterfront and makes for a breathtaking sight to visit.
The “Monument to the Discoveries” represents Portugal’s overseas expansion and features 33 different characters impeccably sculpted into the concrete and stone material. Reaching over 183 feet (56 meters), the Padrão dos Descobrimentos can be seen from a while away.
2.) Pastéis de Belém
This bakery was definitely one of the most spectacular highlights of my trip to Lisbon!
Pastéis de Belém has been around since 1837, and one of their most famous specialties is their pastel de nata. Pastel de nata is a traditional Portuguese egg tart pastry with cinnamon sprinkled on top.
Pastel de nata can be found in small shops and bakeries all over Lisbon, but if you’re making the trip, might as well go to where they’re made the BEST! You know Pastéis de Belém is good when it’s packed everyday at all times of the day.
There is no snack better than a warm, fresh out of the oven pastel de nata from Pastéis de Belém while strolling through Lisbon. There is always a line, typically out of the door too, but it moves fast, and it’s worth the wait.
3.) Praça do Comércio
The Praça do Comércio is a beautiful, open plaza in Lisbon that faces the Tejo Estuary. Bright yellow buildings surround the plaza on three sides with the last side opening up towards the water.
A stunning highlight of the city, stop by the Praça do Comércio to stroll through the busy streets filled with bakeries, restaurants, and shops or to take pictures with the iconic statue of King Joseph I that stands in the center of the plaza.
4.) Jerónimos Monastery
One of the most intricate pieces of architecture in all of Lisbon has to be the Jerónimos Monastery located in the Belém district. This building holds a lot of religious history and significance that dates back to the 1500s.
The entrance is ornately decorated with incredibly detailed sculptures of various figures and saints, and this spot is truly one of Lisbon’s greatest treasures. Each corner of this monastery is filled with impeccable detail and being amidst the gothic-style architecture takes you back to a different time.
The Jerónimos Monastery should definitely be a must-see on your Lisbon travel list!
5.) Castelo de São Jorge
Sitting at the top of a hill, the Castelo de São Jorge boasts amazing viewpoints of Lisbon that stretch for miles and miles. You can see incredible views of the water while also overseeing the rooftops of thousands of buildings in Lisbon.
The Castelo de São Jorge is one of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks and is a symbol of the city. A perfect spot for pictures, the Castelo de São Jorge is a great place to watch the sunset and walk around the historic castle.
6.) Torre de Belém (Belém Tower)
Close to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the Torre de Belém is another iconic spot in Lisbon located in the Belém district. Eye-catching and located right on the shores of the water, the Torre de Belém is a great place to take pictures and take a walk near the water.
