Less-Guilt, Baked Donuts! Easy, dairy-free fall dessert!
How are these doughnuts healthier?
-Typical donuts from the store are fried in oil. This recipe calls for baking them instead!
-This recipe uses NO BUTTER! Instead, this recipe calls for coconut oil, which is a great source of healthy fatty acids and contains no cholesterol, unlike butter.
-Instead of using all-purpose or bread flour, this recipe uses whole wheat pastry flour, which has more iron, calcium, and nutrients than white flour.
-To add moisture to the batter, I use vanilla Greek yogurt! Greek yogurt is an excellent source of protein and calcium and also adds some sweetness to this recipe!
I’ve also tried this recipe with unsweetened vanilla coconut milk yogurt and it turned out just as amazing! Use this if you’re dairy-free.
-Instead of regular white sugar, I opted for coconut sugar. Coconut sugar has a lower glycemic index and is not refined like white sugar.
-Additionally, instead of using whole milk or buttermilk, this recipe utilizes almond milk which is lower in calories and another great source of calcium.

Healthier, Baked Spice Donuts with Maple Glaze
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients (for the donuts)
- 1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp baking soda
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- ⅛ tsp ground cloves
- ⅛ tsp ground ginger
- 1 pinch salt
Wet Ingredients (for the donuts)
- ½ cup coconut sugar melted and cooled
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- ¼ cup vanilla Greek yogurt or unsweetened vanilla coconut milk yogurt (if dairy-free)
- ¼ cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1 large egg (room temperature)
- 1¼ tsp vanilla extract
For the maple glaze:
- 5 tsp coconut oil
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract
- ¼ cup pure maple syrup
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
Making the spice donuts:
- Preheat the oven to 350° Fahrenheit.
- Prepare your donut pan with baking spray and set aside.
- Combine and whisk all the dry ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. In a medium bowl, mix together all of the wet ingredients until thoroughly combined.
- Carefully add the wet ingredients into the large bowl with the dry ingredients. Whisk just until all of the dry ingredients disappear in order to not overmix.
- Prepare your gallon-sized ziplock bag by folding down the top to make it easier to transfer the batter. Scoop the entirety of the bowl's contents into the bag.
- Cut the corner off of the bag in order to create a makeshift piping bag. Carefully pipe the donut batter into your baking pan, and try not to cover the circle part in the middle.
- Bake for about 10-11 minutes. The donuts should have risen a good amount in the pans. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool in the pan for about 15 minutes.
Making the glaze:
- In a small saucepan or pot, heat 5 tsp of coconut oil. Once it has melted, add in the maple syrup. Stir with a silicone spatula and add in your vanilla extract. Stir once again and remove from the heat.
- Pour the maple syrup mixture into a mixing bowl. Then, add ⅓ cup of sifted powdered sugar and stir until the sugar dissolves. Add another ⅓ cup of sifted powdered sugar, stir until dissolved, and repeat with the last ⅓ cup.
Glazing the donuts:
- Gently remove the doughnuts from the pan. Using your hands, take one donut at a time and circle/swish the top part in the glaze to coat. Once glazed, let the donuts set on a piece of wax or parchment paper. Enjoy right away!
